If a disability isn\u2019t easily noticed, it can be overlooked \u2013 or even discounted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>What is a non-apparent disability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A non-apparent disability is a physical, mental, or neurological condition that is not visible from the outside, yet can limit or challenge a person&#8217;s movements, senses, or activities.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples of non-apparent disabilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Autism<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Epilepsy<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Brain Injury<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Fibromyalgia<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Mental Illness such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because disabilities like the ones listed above can create mobility limitations, UZURV Drivers provide transportation access for people with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities. By offering rides, Drivers proactively remove mobility barriers so riders can participate fully in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Working with people who have non-apparent disabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Witman offered two pieces of advice to UZURV Drivers when working with and for people whose disabilities aren\u2019t obvious.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Replace judgment with curiosity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of preconceived notions and assumptions about people with non-apparent disabilities,\u201d said Witman. \u201cWe automatically come from a place of judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask people to withhold their judgment and replace it with curiosity,\u201d she continued. \u201cAsk riders questions like, \u2018What can I do to help you be successful today?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">It\u2019s important to note that curiosity should not lead to intrusive questions or a HIPAA violation. If a rider does not appear to have a disability, do not ask what their disability is or why they are riding with UZURV.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if a rider does not make eye contact, do not assume they are being rude. They may have a non-apparent disability that makes it difficult to maintain eye contact.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than judge their behavior, ask how they prefer to communicate on the ride that day. Then provide what your rider needs to be successful in that moment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay in conversation with your rider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Supporting a rider with non-apparent disabilities is not always obvious.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to ask your rider <strong>before every ride<\/strong> what they need to be successful that day, so you can make their ride as seamless and enjoyable as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Ask the Golden Question, <strong><em>\u201cWhat can I do to assist you to the vehicle today?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes your rider may need physical support when you perform door-to-door service, and sometimes they may only need you to walk beside them as they support themselves. Sometimes your rider wants to chat and exchange stories, and sometimes they prefer to remain quiet.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t know what they need unless you ask.<\/p>\n<p>Stay in conversation with your rider about what they need at any given time.\u00a0Every rider has different needs that change from day to day, sometimes from moment to moment.
