After retiring from the Jacksonville Transit Authority as a professional driver, Lawal realized his work wasn’t done and wanted to do more.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to sit back,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to give back to my community and driving is my hobby.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawal chose UZURV because of the flexible hours. He could choose the rides he wanted, and he had a passion for providing transportation to special needs people in Jacksonville.<\/p>\n

That was three years ago. He\u2019s been driving ever since.<\/p>\n

Working with UZURV is more than just being on the road. It\u2019s also becoming acquainted with your riders – their needs and their personalities.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor most of my rides, I know the riders and they know me,\u201d Lawal said. \u201cThat makes it easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now and then, Lawal gets riders he doesn\u2019t know. That\u2019s when his years of experience as a driver helps.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need my service, so I learn how to work with a particular rider,\u201d Lawal explained. \u201cI know I can handle them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawal’s advice to new Drivers<\/p>\n

Lawal wrapped up our conversation with some sound advice for new UZURV drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cUZURV provides reliable transportation to all people, including those who are not able to use public transportation,\u201d he said. \u201cSo my responsibility, before I pick up anyone, is safety.”<\/p>\n

Lawal’s experience not only informs the way he handles riders – it also helps him manage his vehicle on the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want to know why I\u2019m a good driver?\u201d he asked. \u201cI know \u200b\u200bI can\u2019t control the car in front of me. I can\u2019t control the car behind me. I can\u2019t control the car to the right and to the left. The only thing I can control is the wheel in front of me,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the driver\u2019s responsibility to pay attention to what is going on around them. It\u2019s a common-sense job if someone knows what they are doing,\u201d Lawal went on to say.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s easy and I have fun doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here’s a quick checklist to make sure you are safe and taking care of your riders.<\/p>\n

\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Provide door-to-door service for every ride.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Do not use your phone while driving.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Accept all service animals – it’s the law.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Don\u2019t share your Rider\u2019s personal information.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Keep the interior and exterior of your vehicle clean and uncluttered.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0No smoking or vaping in your vehicle.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0Seat Riders in the back seat for safety. Only seat a Rider in the front if a health condition or disability makes it difficult to sit in the back.
\n\u2611\ufe0f \u00a0If an accident occurs, ensure you and your Riders are safe. Then, dial 911 and contact UZURV Operations through your app.<\/p>\n
