If a disability isn\u2019t easily noticed, it can be overlooked \u2013 or even discounted.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text_color=&#8221;color-lxmt&#8221; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;654535&#8243; text_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;]What is a non-apparent disability?[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;814527&#8243;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A non-apparent disability is a physical, mental, or neurological condition that is not visible from the outside, yet can limit or challenge a person&#8217;s movements, senses, or activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of non-apparent disabilities include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epilepsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brain Injury<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fibromyalgia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Illness such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because disabilities like the ones listed above can create mobility limitations, UZURV Drivers provide transportation access for people with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities. By offering rides, Drivers proactively remove mobility barriers so riders can participate fully in their communities.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text_color=&#8221;color-lxmt&#8221; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;111575&#8243; text_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;]Working with people who have non-apparent disabilities[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;236047&#8243;]Witman offered two pieces of advice to UZURV Drivers when working with and for people whose disabilities aren\u2019t obvious.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_color=&#8221;color-lxmt&#8221; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;232413&#8243; text_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;]Replace judgment with curiosity[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;268348&#8243;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have a lot of preconceived notions and assumptions about people with non-apparent disabilities,\u201d said Witman. \u201cWe automatically come from a place of judgment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI ask people to withhold their judgment and replace it with curiosity,\u201d she continued. \u201cAsk riders questions like, \u2018What can I do to help you be successful today?\u2019\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_color=&#8221;color-lxmt&#8221; heading_semantic=&#8221;h3&#8243; text_size=&#8221;h3&#8243; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;211981&#8243; text_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;]It\u2019s important to note that curiosity should not lead to intrusive questions or a HIPAA violation. If a rider does not appear to have a disability, drivers are instructed not to ask what their disability is or why they are riding with UZURV.[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;159852&#8243;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, if a rider does not make eye contact, rather than assuming they are being rude, they may have a non-apparent disability that makes it difficult to maintain eye contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than judge their behavior, drivers are asked how they prefer to communicate on the ride that day.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243;][vc_custom_heading text_color=&#8221;color-lxmt&#8221; uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;251552&#8243; text_color_type=&#8221;uncode-palette&#8221;]Drivers stay in conversation with their rider[\/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=&#8221;878860&#8243;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting a rider with non-apparent disabilities is not always obvious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s important drivers ask riders <\/span><b>before every ride<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what they need to be successful that day, so their ride can be as seamless and enjoyable as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drivers ask the Golden Question, <\/span><b><i>\u201cWhat can I do to assist you to the vehicle today?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t know what someone needs unless you ask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drivers are encouraged to stay in conversation with their rider about what they need at any given time. Every rider has different needs that change from day to day, sometimes from moment to moment. The only way to know is to ask and listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s such an easy lift to ask what someone needs,\u201d said Witman. \u201cAnd it makes all the
